What is Suede Leather?

Suede, sometimes called split suede, is a soft, velvety leather known for its luxurious texture and flexibility. It is made from the inner side of the hide, achieved by splitting the leather to remove the top grain. This process gives suede its signature softness. The flesh side is then sanded, creating a fine nap that enhances its distinct look and feel.

Suede is typically made from cowhide, lambskin, goatskin, deerskin, and pigskin, each offering unique characteristics and uses.

In some cases, two-sided suede leather is available, where the outer side retains its top grain or full-grain surface, while the inner flesh side is buffed into suede. This type combines suede’s softness with the durability of grain leather, making it a versatile choice for various projects.
