What is Vegetable-Tanned Leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather is made using only natural plant-based tannins. The tannins used in vegetable tanning are extracted from plants or tree barks such as oak, chestnut, quebracho, or mimosa. Each of these tannins imparts unique colors and characteristics to the leather. For instance, leather tanned with mimosa tannins features a lighter color and is renowned for its flexibility and softness.
Key Features of Vegetable-Tanned Leather:
- Highly Workable: Due to its natural tanning process, this leather is ideal for tooling, carving, embossing, molding, and absorbs dyes exceptionally well.
- Most natural look: Due to minimal alterations and its natural color, this leather has the most character, showcasing unique textures and grain patterns.
- Eco-Friendly: The use of plant-based materials ensures minimal environmental impact.
- Gets Better Over Time: The leather darkens, softens in texture, and develops unique character as it ages.
What Types of Vegetable-Tanned Leather Do We Offer?
We currently offer two types of vegetable-tanned leather, both crafted exclusively from full-grain A and B-grade hides and tanned using natural mimosa extract:
- Vegetable-Tanned Leather: A full-grain leather with medium firmness and a smooth, classic surface, perfect for a variety of crafting needs.
- Milled Vegetable-Tanned Leather: A full-grain leather that goes through a milling process, which enhances its softness and flexibility and results in a unique, grainy/pebbled texture.

What vegetable-tanned leather cuts are available?
Currently, we offer leather sides that are categorized into large and small. For the best value and accuracy, our leather hides are grouped into these categories with a slight variation of 1–2 sq. ft. In addition to sides, we also provide pre-cut leather panels in the following sizes: 12" x 12", 12" x 24", 12" x 36", 24" x 24".
Why does vegetable-tanned leather develop a patina?
Vegetable-tanned leather is treated with natural plant-based tannins instead of chemicals and, unlike other leathers, has no heavy coatings or synthetic finishes. This allows it to absorb oils, moisture, and light over time. It gradually darkens and develops a rich patina as it interacts with light, air, and natural oils from your skin. This aging process enhances its natural beauty, making each piece unique.
